This project is dedicated to Erin Stevens. Erin has been an integral part of my academic and personal life for the past seventeen years. She not only sparked my interest in history, but has provided me with many opportunities that have helped me to develop into a historian.

I would also like to dedicate this project to my daughters, Cora and Vivian. They continue to supply me with the desire to preserve the past for their generation and generations to come.

I would like to acknowledge historian Lucy Allen who provided the inspiration for this project and has provided me with a multitude of useful primary resources, databases, and collections.
